Science Background

THE RISK OF COVID-19 CONTAMINATION OF LIQUID NITROGEN

PRESENTATION:
Liquid nitrogen is a low-temperature element widely used in healthcare and industry (including food) due to its particular qualities. Viruses (including Covid-19), bacteria and spores that come into contact with liquid nitrogen (or nitrogen vapours) freeze immediately and contaminate the gas. Liquid nitrogen can be contaminated at any time after the production process, during transportation and at its site of use. When liquid nitrogen is used it can contaminate surfaces, environments, cells, tissues, operators, patients and food.

The problem of contagion in healthcare and assisted reproduction is not limited to infected patients. Viral load on liquid nitrogen used in manipulation and cryopreservation procedures is rarely checked in clinical practice for various reasons. In order to eliminate any risk, liquid nitrogen needs to be sterilized and certified (virusfree) immediately before use; the same nitrogen is then used to wash frozen samples before thawing.

"For a complete risk-analysis, we believe that we should focus on the real problem: the contamination of liquid nitrogen and nitrogen vapour (LN /NV), which can occur at any step (from manufacturing to final use including transport, storage, distribution and preparation for cryopreservation), rather than on the hypothetical presence of COVID-19 in our gametes and embryos. Airborne contaminants such as COVID-19 can come into contact with LN /NV and remain cryopreserved. [...] The use of contaminated LN /NV risks virus awakening and the contamination of warmed samples, environment, and operators." (Parmegiani and Vajta Human Reproduction 2020).
